Most adults do not have a will, but those who do are satisfied with the process of making one, research shows.

A YouGov study of 2,063 adults in the UK found that only 38% have made a will, and most tend to put off doing so until later in their life.

Around two-thirds (67%) of those aged 55 and over have a will, but this drops to 36% in the 45 to 54 age group.

The main reason for not making a will, according to 41% of those surveyed, is that they "just haven't got round to it yet".

Those who did prepare a will reported an overall high level of satisfaction with the process, with at least three quarters saying they were satisfied or very satisfied with every aspect of it.

The most commonly cited reasons for making a will include:

  • to ensure my estate is distributed how I have intended (57%)
  • to secure the future of my family (48%)
  • for peace of mind (47%).
