The Scottish Draft Budget announced in December 2018 looks set to be approved, following a deal between the SNP and the Scottish Green Party.

Scottish Finance Secretary Derek Mackay confirmed on 31 January 2019 that he had reached an agreement with the Green Party to support the Budget.

In exchange for some concessions, the Green Party has agreed to support the Budget through all three stages of parliamentary votes, with the first stage being approved by 67 votes to 58.

Among the measures introduced in the Scottish Budget are changes to income tax rates for 2019/20, which will see the starter and basic rates rise in line with inflation.

However, the higher-rate threshold has been frozen at £43,430, further increasing the tax gap for higher earners between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

The higher-rate threshold in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will rise to £50,000 from 6 April 2019.
