What is a pension?

Pensions are long-term savings plans which provide income and capital in retirement. Although there are several different types of pension schemes available, they are all a tax-efficient way to save for your retirement.

What should I be thinking about?

  • Will your pension income last for the rest of your life?
  • What are the tax implications of accessing your pension fund?
  • Is your pension fund being managed effectively to maximise longevity?
  • We can assist with all aspects of pension and retirement planning and help you shape your retirement plans to best meet your individual needs and circumstances.

Are you on track for your retirement?

Planning ahead will help ensure you’re on track for the financial future you want. We can help you look at what you might need to retire your way. Pensions can be a good way to support your future financial requirements. They can fit in with changing working habits and lifestyle needs later on in life.

They are tax efficient and you usually get tax relief on every payment you make but there are limits to how much you can put into a pension each tax year.

Your money, your choice.

Your choices give you the opportunity to plan for your retirement and look to your future with confidence.
All that choice can often mean increased confusion. So let us help you to take a clear look at the options available to you, and what they might mean for your money in retirement.
Check out our resources page for guides and calculators that look at pension scheme types, annuities, tax-free allowances and calculators to estimate pension fund shortfalls and state pension eligibility.

The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is a valuable part of the pay and reward package for employees working in local government or working for other employers participating in the scheme.

  • A secure pension
  • Flexibility to pay more or less contributions
  • Tax efficient now and in the future
  • Peace of mind
  • Freedom to choose when to take your pension

Many Local Authority employees opt out of a pension scheme or choose not to join as an entitled member especially if they are on a low income or they consider themselves to be years away from retirement.

The Local Government Pension Scheme provides other incentives apart from retirement benefits.

Your pension is one of the most important benefits available to you as a teacher.

  • You receive a guaranteed pension through the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
  • Contributions from you and your employer are towards the cost of the benefits paid out by the Scheme.
  • It’s a Defined Benefit Scheme, registered with HMRC, and is based on your salary and service rather than investments – so you’ll know what the annual pension you’re building up will be.
  • Your pension will be a regular source of income when you retire.
  • You’ll join the career average arrangement and accrue benefits each year based on 1/57th of your annual pensionable
earnings, which are revalued each year.
